Casa Piedra

Price:
Menu: Fusion cooking

Do you know that feeling? When you are actually driving a little too fast and you see a nice restaurant along the motorway, but can’t brake in time to park there. Casa Piedra at Cala Llonga is one of those. But it is definitely worth driving a little more slowly here!

The frontage is already inviting: a sweet, stone (piedra) cottage with two Asian bikes on the roof.

We had reserved in the romantic back garden. We walked past an open kitchen where chefs wearing red–and-black headscarves were busy at their work. Owner Alberto had time to tell us something about the restaurant.

Fusion cooking: a combination of Spanish with Vietnamese, Japanese, Peruvian and even some Italian influences. To give an example of the Italian-Japanese combinations: sushi made with the ingredients of vitello tonnato.

Alberto started the restaurant seven years ago. The previous owner was an Englishman, and the restaurant actually seemed more like an English pub. The big change came five years ago when he employed Chef Leo, a Vietnamese born in Spain. That was the moment the first fusion cooking recipes were designed. During trips made afterwards, more and more beautiful combinations were created and the charcoal and Josper ovens were purchased.

Alberto: "In fact, we do not have a menu with starters, main courses and desserts. We just prepare what we like! We also don’t explain all the extras used as garnish on the menu, which means we can change those ingredients every time."

The menu is provided in three languages: Spanish, English and ... Dutch! Why? Casa Piedra had a lot of Dutch guests in the first years and decided to replace the German listings with those in the Dutch language.

From Monday to Friday between 13:00 and 16:00, Casa Piedra has a Menu del Dia (Daily Menu) at €14.95.

We chose rollitos vietnamitas (Vietnamese rolls, according to chef Leo’s mother’s recipe) and Casa Piedra sushi (salmon, flatfish, avocado, garlic and oyster sauce), the magret de pato (duck cutlets baked in the Josper oven with foie gras rice) and carrilleras de cerdo iberico (charcoal-stewed pork cheeks with truffle mashed potatoes). Everything, but really everything, was delicious! Fresh, fresh and very special taste combinations. Add in the friendly staff, who take the time to explain everything, and from now on Casa Piedra is one of my favourite restaurants. The hidden gem along the motorway, which I will never drive past at speed again!
